Canyon sent 28 students to the Region 1-4A UIL Academic meet held at Frenship High School in Lubbock, with several competitors earning a spot in the state competition.
As a school, Canyon finished with 73 points overall, with the speech team claiming third place overall with 33 of those points.
Earning spots at state are Sawyer Birkenfeld, who placed second in Prose Interpretation; Aly Bice, who took first place in Poetry Interpretation; and Emma Earl, who placed third in Feature Writing. In Accounting, Cole Debow finished third, with Casen Stephenson (4th) and Amelia Stephenson (6th) advancing as alternates. Riley Wilson also advances as a fifth-place alternate in Persuasive Speaking.
Business teacher, Stephanie Bass, will be taking the qualifying Accounting team to state for the second year in a row.
“We have three seniors on the team this year,” Bass said. “It’s really special that we have one more trip together before graduation. Having those long talks and growing those deep connections on the drive up there will always be my favorite part.”
The state competition is expected to be held in at the University of Texas at Austin from May 18 through May 22. Wish our students luck! Go Eagles!
