Drum major reflects on leadership role

The Soaring Pride Bands marching show Nocturnal is inspired by the phenomenon of the bats in Austin flying out from the Congress Avenue Bridge. On Saturday, the Soaring Pride Band received a Division 1 rating at the UIL Region 1 Marching Band Contest. The band will compete next week at the Duncanville Marching Invitational and on Oct. 29 at the UIL Area A Marching Band Contest.

The Soaring Pride Bands show, Fugue State, is under the direction of Eric Rath. This is his first year as head director of the Soaring Pride Band. Prior to this, Rath worked as head director for Canyon Junior High. “I came in 2014,” Rath said. “So coming into this role has different responsibilities, but it’s not a complete change of pace. It was really important to try to keep those standards high, and keep the culture of excellence in place.”

Canyon High band director Eric Rath transitioned to the high school after spending six years directing the Junior High band. Rath majored in music at WTAMU. “This is all I’ve ever wanted to do since the seventh grade,” Rath said. In addition to being a director, Rath composes original pieces and arranges music for marching band shows.
