During high school, some people know exactly what they want to do after they graduate. While others have no clue what they want to make out of their life. This could be because of a lack of involvement.

Being involved means doing Sports, UIL Academics, Band, Choir, National Honor Society, Robotics, Drama Club, Chess club, getting a job, or simply showing school spirit. The options are almost endless.

Participating in different clubs or activities during your high school years is very important and all students should. If students are just going to school and doing nothing extra, their high school experience will suffer.

One way to get connected is to try out for a sport. Sports are a great way to meet new people and make friends, while also furthering the skills the athlete currently has. Sports can also teach life lessons that will stick. Simple sayings like, “It’s not over until you give up” or “Being an athlete is how you compete when you are tired” can motivate athletes to try harder than they ever have before. Luckily it’s not too late to get signed up. During winter break students can change their schedules’ and in the spring transfer to the class period of their chosen sport. It must be noted that students are required to be in an athletic class period to be eligible to play. Are sports not your thing? No problem, there are more options.

Another way to get in the mix is to join a UIL Academics team. Teams such as Creative Writing, Number Sense, Informative Speaking, and Current Issues and Events are offered and are loved by students. Being on a UIL Academics team gives a student the opportunity to compete competitively without having to do a sport. If students are good at writing, they may consider talking to writing coaches Jasinia Frausto and Ellie Ward who teach writing styles in different events. If writing is not one of your strengths, students who are good with technology may consider talking to coaches Lance Culbert and Charles Johnson for information on Computer Applications or Young Filmmakers.

If those options don’t sound appealing then consider joining a club. Our school offers many student organizations such as Key Club, Leo Club, ASL Honor Society, Speech and Debate and more. Some clubs have dues to pay, while others are completely free to the students. Clubs give students the ability to connect with people from completely different organizations. Students become well rounded and gain the ability to talk to all kinds of people with different interests and personalities.

If students don’t want to do any of the above, they will not get to experience having lasting relationships with the people around them. Being connected to the school community helps with getting to know people and gives students the opportunity to find out what they are good at then pursue it.

In high school your friends will drift towards different career paths, hobbies, and interests, but how can students know what they like if they don’t ever try anything new? This is what makes getting involved in extracurriculars so important. Whether it be Cosmetology, Art club, FFA, Drama Club, or whatever it may be, everyone has interests, and we are lucky to have so many opportunities to pursue whatever passions we have at our school. We hope students do their best to find something that intrigues them, and they get more involved with the school.
