So many artists have been dropping new songs recently. Noah Kahan, Harry Styles and Lana Del Ray just to name a few. Let’s take a look at a couple of hit-worthy songs.
The Great Divide: Noah Kahan
Released on January 20, “The Great Divide” is Noah Kahan’s lead single for his upcoming album of the same name, set to be released on April 24. Kahan sings about growing apart from an old friend, and his deep regret of not noticing the friend’s struggles. This song takes the listener on an emotional journey, while providing a sense of comfort and hope. I love to play this song while driving with the windows down because it makes me believe that everything will be okay in the end. This is one of my favorite songs Noah Kahan has released.
Drag Path: Twenty One Pilots
After a long time of waiting from the fans, “Drag Path” by the Twenty One Pilots was finally released to streaming platforms on February 17. Originally, it was a bonus track on Breach: Digital Remains, only available to those who purchased this limited edition version. The song became viral on social media with edits of films and trends where users reflect on their past. When recording the new version for streaming platforms, they made a shorter, stripped-down version. Many people, including myself, are disappointed with the new version, considering they took out almost two minutes of the song. While the new version is still amazing, I miss all of the verses they cut out giving the song its soul.
Aperture: Harry Styles
After about a two year long hiatus after the end of his ‘Love on Tour’, Harry Styles kicked off his new era with the single, “Aperture” on January 22. This is the first song released for his new album titled “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally.” coming out March 6. Contrary to his normal pop/rock style of music, “Aperture” contains an electronic/dance style. The upbeat feel and the lyrics “we belong together’ mimics the feeling of dancing with your best friends with no care in the world. I personally enjoy the new sound, and am excited for what’s to come with the rest of the album.
Homewrecker: Sombr
Sombr released “Homewrecker” on February 5. In this song Sombr talks about wanting to be with someone that’s in another relationship, but not wanting to break them apart and be a ‘homewrecker’. Similar to his other songs, it is an upbeat pop-hit, making it a fun listen. I really like this song because it contains angsty lyrics that many can relate to, but a beat that makes you get up and dance.
Badlands: Mumford & Sons, featuring: Gracie Abrams
A collaboration between the band, Mumford & Sons and singer/songwriter, Gracie Abrams, titled “Bandlands” was released on February 20. It is a part of Mumford & Sons new album ‘Prizefighter’. With many interpretations circling the internet, one thing is agreed upon is that this song is about a person who enjoys a wild and risky life. It takes you on a journey of accepting that you can enjoy an intense life, and are not always going to settle down like you thought you would. The song encapsulates the feeling of full freedom in who you are. I love how all of their voices mix together perfectly, and gets your emotions going. This song was a huge success in my opinion.
White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter: Lana Del Ray
“White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter” is a very unique and artsy song. Released on February 17, this song has sparked many different opinions. The way I would describe this song is a mix of old Disney movies and Halloween. It has a witch-that-lives-in-a-cottage-in-the-woods vibe. Many people believe that the song is weird and doesn’t fit Lana’s normal songwriting. The other half believe that this song is a masterpiece and sounds more like Lana than ever before. I think that this song is very fun and whimsical. It’s like it has its own personality, which is my favorite part about it.
