After being named Region 16 Secondary Teacher of the Year, RTI Math teacher Jennifer Boren celebrates with Superintendent Darryl Flusche and Principal Tim Gilliland at her reception.

The state of Texas blew the surprise.

Principal Tim Gilliland planned to surprise RTI Math teacher Jennifer Boren after finding out she had been named Region 16 Teacher of the Year. However, the state of Texas sent Boren an e-mail two days prior revealing her status. The staff celebrated her award Tuesday with cake and a reception.

“I received a strange e-mail announcing I was not a state finalist,” Boren said. “But I scrolled down and it said that I was a region finalist. Then, Mr. Gilliland told me in his office that morning.”

Boren was named CISD Secondary Teacher of the Year and Canyon High School Teacher of the Year last year. The region encompasses more than 50 different school districts. Boren said she was both shocked and honored when she found out she would receive the award.

“I just know there are so many teachers here at the high school and in the Panhandle that make powerful impacts on students every day,” Boren said. “I feel humbled.”

Boren said the team surrounding her helped her reach this point in her career.

“We use West Texas A&M University students as peer mentors,” Boren said. “The math intervention team is great. It is just the team around me. I am just really honored to represent Canyon High School and the Panhandle.”
