Canyon High School earned the 2014 district 3-AAA academic championship.

Students on the UIL Academic Team competed in the District 3-4A Academic meet at West Texas A&M University Thursday, March 20 and the One-Act cast and crew competed Tuesday, March 25 at Amarillo College. Canyon High School won first place with a total of 477 points.

Students placed in numerous events including  accounting, calculator applications, current issues and events, computer applications, computer science, editorial writing, feature writing, headline writing, informative speaking, literary criticism, spelling and vocabulary, mathematics, number sense, news writing, ready writing, persuasive speaking, prose interpretations, poetry interpretations, CX debate and social studies. Students who placed in the top three will advance to the regional meet May 2-3 in Abilene. The state meet will be held May 19-21 in Austin.

“UIL is a great program that allows you to strengthen your abilities in many different areas,” sophomore Quade Salazar said. “It has really given me an idea on how to handle myself publicly and professionally, because if a debate between you and a person is good enough, who wins comes down to how did you dress, are you a natural speaker, how confident are you? I’ve been told by many adults that those are defining factors in real life interviews.”

Junior Abby Caviness said she participates to learn more about journalism.

“For me, it’s not about competing and getting a medal,” Caviness said. “If I place, it’s about learning how to better my paper. My favorite part about contest is getting my paper back and seeing what I got points counted off for and see what I needed to do better. I always do my absolute best and try to place first, but it’s not my first thought when it comes to contest.”
