Senior Christian McGuire runs the ball against Clovis. The Eagles beat the Wildcats 43-15.

The football team opened their season against Clovis Friday, Aug. 24 with a win 43-15. The Eagles head into Week two with a 1-0 record against the Perryton Rangers who enter the contest 0-1.

After the Eagles graduated 15 seniors in the spring, only 3 starters returned on each side of the ball for the 2023 season. They ended the 2022 season 10-2. Coach Matt Lovorn joined the coaching staff as Offensive Coordinator last spring after it was announced that Offensive Coordinator Billy Rushing was leaving for a head coaching position at Stanton.

“We lost several key pieces from last year,” senior Christian McGuire said. “But we have some young guys that have stepped up and can collectively take on the role the [2023 seniors] left.”

McGuire also said he believes they have a solid team this year with great leadership.

“I think we have the ability to win a lot of games this season and make a run in the playoffs,” McGuire said. “I really look forward to getting the GOAT back.”

Head football coach Todd Winfrey said he was looking forward to the Clovis game because that meant football season was finally starting.

“We hope to compete for a district championship,” Winfrey said. “But every district game will be so much fun and so competitive.”

Winfrey said a major difference between last year and this year is the camaraderie between the seniors and the underclassmen. These relationships could help meet Winfrey’s expectations for the season.

“We expect this team to grow each practice and game,” Winfrey said.

Hello, My name is Bradley Enriquez! This will be my first year on the Newspaper staff and I am beyond excited for the adventures this program is going to take me on. I am a sophomore this year at Canyon High. Outside of Journalism I am on the varsity tennis team. I like to set high goals for myself that I am determined to accomplish before the year ends. Some of my favorite things to do are taking pictures, playing tennis, hanging out with friends and jamming out to music! Mrs. Bass is my favorite teacher! :)

Jasinia Frausto, Adviser
Hello. I am Mrs. Frausto. This is my first year at Canyon High advising and coaching journalism after spending several years teaching at Canyon Intermediate. Art, photography and writing have always fueled my happiness, and I learned early on that through journalism I can practice all three. At 14 years old, I shattered my ankle, forcing me to hang up my soccer cleats and dig out an old camera to join the yearbook staff. My journalism career started as a sophomore at Canyon High, pushed me through college and the non-profit sector early into my adulthood before gracefully bringing me back home to Canyon High. I believe photographs are worth a thousand words, words are worth a pot of gold and there is always a story waiting to be told. I spend my time away from school with Coach Frausto and our awesome 7-year-old daughter playing golf and making memories.
