Basketball teams continue season Friday against Hereford

Junior Adam Alexander advances to the basket during the Jan. 27 game against Dumas.

The Eagle and Lady Eagle basketball teams played the Dumas Demons at home Jan. 27. Canyon’s girls won 58-21, and the boys lost 51-65. Both teams will travel to Hereford Jan. 30 to face the Whitefaces.

The district season for girls’ basketball began Jan. 9 against Dumas. Canyon won 40-25. Sophomore Paitlyn Tankersley said the team played well against Dumas.

“We definitely played better against them this time, but we still have a way to go,” Tankersley said. “We are going to continue the journey by growing stronger as a team and giving our best every game.”

The girls are undefeated so far in district. The district season for boys’ basketball began Jan. 16 against Palo Duro. Canyon lost 65-45. They beat Caprock by a buzzer-beater the following game and were then defeated by Randall, setting their district record at 1-2. Senior Aaron Hughes said the boys’ team is working to make a playoff berth.

“We are aiming to do really well in the postseason,” Hughes said. “The district season is extremely competitive, but I feel that if we can play as a team we will be successful.”

Hughes said he hopes students and the community will continue to come out to the games and support the teams for the remainder of the season.

“It really shows pride for Canyon,” Hughes said. “The boys’ basketball team seems to make games extra suspenseful.”
