‘Great American Rivalry’ ends in defeat

The Canyon football team bursts out of the Eagle tunnel, led by senior Clint Halencak with the American flag.

The varsity football team lost to the Tascosa Rebels in double overtime Friday night with a final score of 55-49. The game was a featured match in the national “Great American Rivalry” series for the week. Following their off week, the Eagles will travel to Lawton Eisenhower Oct. 3.

Canyon started off the game with a quick touchdown, but Tascosa quickly answered, tying the game. Canyon scored twice more in the first quarter but Tascosa scored unanswered in the second quarter, ending the first half at 28-21. Canyon started the scoring again in the second half followed by three Tascosa touchdowns. Canyon scored twice more before Tascosa tied the game with just over a minute left in the fourth quarter. Both teams scored in the first overtime, and Tascosa held the Eagles to score one final touchdown, ending the game at 55-49.

“They were a very good team to play against,” sophomore receiver Dakota Puga said. “We stayed with them until the final seconds, but we had some mistakes that cost us the game.”

Senior offensive lineman Ty Crenshaw said he thinks the team played one of the best games they have played all season.

“The team played as hard as they could,” senior offensive lineman Ty Crenshaw said. “Effort wasn’t the issue. Obviously there were times when we couldn’t execute, but that will happen every game.”

Though this was the first loss of the 2014 season for the Eagles, Crenshaw said the loss is no indication of the expectations of the Eagles’ season this year.

“You can expect a lot of fight from us, no matter who the opponent,” Crenshaw said. “It doesn’t matter if we play someone who we can beat by 5 points or by 50 points. We refuse to be beaten because of a lack of effort.”
