Eagles dominate Borger Bulldogs in first game of season

Defensive end Clint Halencak (63) wraps around Borger’s running back to bring him down.

The varsity football team kicked off their season last Friday with a 44-7 victory over the Borger Bulldogs. The Eagles will face Roswell Friday night at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m.

Canyon scored within the first three minutes and once more before Borger scored their first and only touchdown. At the half, the score was 21-7. The Eagles held the Bulldogs to a scoreless second half while scoring several more times, ending the game at 44-7. The Eagles are off to a 1-0 start following last year’s record-breaking 12-0 season.

“It was awesome to be back out on the field under the lights,” senior quarterback Cade McCallie said. “We have a lot of things to work on, but it was a good win to start off the season.”

McCallie said that the team has worked hard since last season and plans to continue that work, building off of last season and last Friday’s game.

“The team has been working towards this season ever since the last season ended,” senior offensive lineman Ty Crenshaw said. “In that time we’ve been lifting, running, and improving our techniques in order to build on what we did last season. We’ve also been building our chemistry as a team, which helps us play together.”

Crenshaw said that last season’s team’s family-oriented, success driven goals have carried over into this year’s team.

“We think that every time we step on that field, we are with brothers that have worked and sweated alongside us,” Crenshaw said. “Our mindset is always to simply do the job that you are assigned to the best of your ability. If every single person does that, then we believe that the team will have the best chance of winning.”

Crenshaw said the team’s goals for this season include going further in the playoffs than they did last year, but they prefer focusing on doing their individual jobs from week to week.

“All we can do for sure as a team is give our best each and every day, on the field and off,” Crenshaw said. “That’s what you can expect of us.”
