Junior Norman Grimes competes in the 110 hurdles at the regional meet in Abilene in May 2014.

Canyon will be represented by several athletes tomorrow and Saturday at the UIL state track meet.

The girls’ track team had three girls qualify in individual events and two more girls as part of the mile relay. Seniors Shelby Bartley won discus, Sommer Wilder won the 400 meter dash and Kaitlin Rodriguez won the 800 meter dash and 1600 meter run. The qualifying mile relay team of sophomore Izzy Wilson, Rodriguez, junior Brittany Gregory and Wilder also placed first.

Sophomore Norman Grimes qualified in two events for the boys’ team. He placed second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 13.89s and first in the 300 meter hurdles running a 36.90s, making him the fourth fastest high school 300 hurdler in the nation.

“It’s pretty cool to be fourth, and it motivates me to work harder,” Grimes said “I’ve been staying positive and focused, hopefully I’ll do well.”
