Sophomore Joseph Trevino runs his leg of the 3200 relay at the Canyon meet.

On Feb. 28 and March 1 the track teams hosted their first home track meet in 10 years. It was also the first meet on the new track as well as first UIL meet ever to feature wheelchair events in a track meet in the state of Texas.

With an amendment made to the UIL Constitution and Contest rules in October of 2013, wheelchair events will now take place at the UIL State track meet and meets across the state.

“I think that it is great for our school to be the first to establish these events,” senior Kole Bryan said. “I hope to see wheelchair events at every track meet in the future.”

The Canyon meet had three wheelchair events, the 100 meter dash and 400 meter dash with one boy from Dumas competing in those races and one girl from Pampa competing in shot put.

“I thought it was the most inspiring and happiest moment of the track meet,” senior Jordan Norris said. “It made my heart happy to see kids get to compete just like I do every week.”

With the completion of the new track complex south of the school in August 2013, Canyon now has the resources to host meets    .

“I felt honored to be able to participate in Canyon’s first track meet in several years,” junior Christian Cobb said. “Both teams did really good making it a really good meet, and it was made even better that it was the first meet with wheelchair events.”
