The Canyon Eagles run a receiving drill at an afternoon practice last Wednesday.

The Canyon Eagles will face Lubbock High Friday night at Lowry Stadium to begin the 2013 season. Kickoff is scheduled at 7:30 p.m.

A recently completed remodel of the high school football field allowed the Eagles to have summer practices on artificial turf.

“The new field has benefited us by allowing us to prepare on turf since we mostly play on that surface,” senior and middle linebacker Dylan Douglass said.

After last Friday’s scrimmage against Lubbock Coronado, Douglass said the Eagle offense and defense looked great.

“The outcome of the scrimmage prepared a lot of our younger players to experience the game speed and atmosphere that they’ll deal with over the season,” Douglass said. “It also gave us some good film to watch ourselves on and that lets us know what we have to work on.”

Douglass said that the team’s goal is to win the district championship this year, and Friday’s game will be a vital step toward that goal.

“The Lubbock High game is an excellent opportunity to make an early statement this year,” Douglass said. “Our strategy is to win.”
