The Eagles’ Nest, the new school store operated by business management students, will sell items starting Sept. 18, at 7:50 a.m. The Eagle’s Nest business will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays before school from 7:50-8:05, first period from 8:45-9:05, first lunch from 11:40-12:00, second lunch from 12:35-12:55 and after school from 3:40-4:00.
“I’m excited for my business management students to learn how to start a business from the ground up, and to give them hands on experience on running a business,” business teacher Marcie Cook said. “Our goal is to be open five days a week to serve Canyon High School students, faculty, and staff.”
Business teachers have been planning the store for almost three years. The business management students of 2012 wrote and developed the business plan as well as voted for the store name.
“I’ve been trying to think of ways to give students hands-on experience in the business world,” Cook said. “I went to Friscoe ISD and saw their store in their career and technology center.”
Both Business management classes are working on opening the store and have developed a policy manual for rules and procedures. Merchandise includes school supplies, t-shirts, jewelry and key chains. Some items in the store are created by students.
Senior Austin Bradshaw’s key chains and bracelets are for sale, and sophomore Shelby Wilburn’s work features jeweled and decorated phone cases and necklaces. Counseling secretary Reyla Swearingon’s creations include jewelry and spirit items.
The ribbon cutting ceremony with the Canyon Chamber of Commerce Friday, Sept. 14 featured student speakers including junior Amanda Koontz, who thanked business teachers Michaeleen Bainum, Lance Culbert and Gary Ward; principals Tim Gilliland and Cameron Rosser; secretary Yolanda Lawrence and central administration personnel Kim Lockhart, Caleb McClure and Heather Wilson for their support. She also thanked HR’s Flowers, parent Melissa Fangman and art teacher Linda Podzemney for their help with decorating the store.
