Senior Trey Holloway will apply to become a National Merit scholarship finalist after receiving semifinalist honors based on his performance on the PSAT.
Holloway represents CISD as the only semifinalist this year and is the first student from Canyon High school in 9-10 years to make it this far. In Texas, students must score a 216 on the PSAT to become a semifinalist. Holloway scored a 219.
“It’s such a special event and a great honor for Trey and Canyon High School,” Gilliland said. “He’s certainly worked hard. He has a great future in front of him.”
Semifinalists must submit an essay for consideration. Gilliland said the review is an intricate process.
“I had to write a recommendation letter for Trey and counselors had to research his class accomplishments,” Gilliland said.
Only one-third of high scorers qualify to become semifinalists. Committees review the applications late January and finalists are notified early February.

Dang. Hope he gets this scholarship. It’s huge to get up to the semifinals, but it would be absolutely humongous to get to the finals and win. Great job, Trey! And Eddie, for covering this.
