Speaker to address drug awareness Tuesday

CHS will be on assembly bell schedule Tuesday, Feb. 4. to allow students to attend a drug awareness presentation by Geneva “Mika” Camarena in the big gym. Students will be seated in class sections, and Principal Tim Gilliland said the presentation will be a formal assembly

Geneva is wife of DEA special agent Enrique Camarena, who was abducted, tortured and murdered by drug traffickers in 1985. After his death, a Red Ribbon Week was held in his hometown of Calexico, California. In 1988 President and Mrs. Reagan served as honorary chairpersons of Red Ribbon Week. Soon after, the program became a national annual event.

“This is a great opportunity for our kids to learn about the beginnings of Red Ribbon Week,” Gilliland said.
