Safety Day Friday, campus changes affect procedures

The district designated “Safety Day” will be Friday, Aug. 30. The school will remain on regular bell schedule.

In first period, there will be a fire drill, followed by a lock down drill during third period, tight bell schedule between third and fourth periods, a severe weather shelter drill during sixth period and an obstructed fire drill during seventh period. The Canyon Fire Department will be present during the fire drill and the obstructed fire drill.

“As far as safety day goes, some of the things we’ve had to change,” Steven Singleton, assistant principal, said.  “We’ve got the new fence up, so our evacuation route is going to change. If we’re going into a tornado drill, we’ll have to unlock the gate to go into use the north side of the gym, or we can use the south side.”

Singleton said that because of the fence around the football field, students will evacuate through the gate and down to the grass area during evacuation and fire drills.

“Listen to the drill procedures,” Singleton said. “Our teachers are going to go over those. Know what to expect and remain calm.”

This is my second year to serve on the newspaper staff, and I will be filling the position of Co-Editor-in-Chief alongside Cortlyn Dees.  Outside of newspaper, I will also be participating in the school musical, the One Act play, and choir.  I enjoy reading, witty banter, and attempting to make fancy beverages. I want to major in chemistry at Baylor University after graduation.  I am beyond thrilled to be on the newspaper staff again, and I know we’re going to have a fantastic year!

Josh Collins, Associate Editor
This one time, in Australia… Hello everyone! My name is Josh Collins, and I am an associate editor. I am a senior at Canyon High and am involved with several clubs and organizations. I am the president of Key Club, the president of National Honors Society, and am involved heavily with the American Sign Language Honor Society. I am also in the PRO program as well as the CHS End It movement. This summer I took a trip to Australia to attend a week long program at the University of Melbourne for the Young Leaders Winter Program. It was the best trip of my life, it opened my eyes to many cultural differences, and I loved every second. I also worked this summer at Ceta Canyon Methodist Church and Retreat Center. It was my second year working there and was an amazing experience. If I’m not at home napping, I am probably at Sonic or the movies. I love sushi, music, the ocean and writing! I especially love writing entertainment review and features. For college, my dream is to return to the University of Melbourne.
