The football team opened their season against Clovis Friday, Aug. 24 with a win 43-15. The Eagles head into Week two with a 1-0 record against the Perryton Rangers who enter the contest 0-1.
After the Eagles graduated 15 seniors in the spring, only 3 starters returned on each side of the ball for the 2023 season. They ended the 2022 season 10-2. Coach Matt Lovorn joined the coaching staff as Offensive Coordinator last spring after it was announced that Offensive Coordinator Billy Rushing was leaving for a head coaching position at Stanton.
“We lost several key pieces from last year,” senior Christian McGuire said. “But we have some young guys that have stepped up and can collectively take on the role the [2023 seniors] left.”
McGuire also said he believes they have a solid team this year with great leadership.
“I think we have the ability to win a lot of games this season and make a run in the playoffs,” McGuire said. “I really look forward to getting the GOAT back.”
Head football coach Todd Winfrey said he was looking forward to the Clovis game because that meant football season was finally starting.
“We hope to compete for a district championship,” Winfrey said. “But every district game will be so much fun and so competitive.”
Winfrey said a major difference between last year and this year is the camaraderie between the seniors and the underclassmen. These relationships could help meet Winfrey’s expectations for the season.
“We expect this team to grow each practice and game,” Winfrey said.
