Bass guitar? Check.

Mandolin? Check.

Piano? Check.

Saxophone? Check.

Bassoon? Maybe someday.

Senior Kayjay Jones plays five instruments including guitar, bass guitar, piano, mandolin and saxophone. She said playing just comes naturally because she grew up around music.

“My dad plays bluegrass, and I like to play with him,” Jones said. “We play together and go to jams. It’s like get-togethers of people, and we play music. It’s really cool.”

Until freshman year, Jones did not play saxophone and was not in the high school band.

“I didn’t go to junior high,” Jones said. “I was homeschooled until freshman year. Now I’m in honors band.”

Jones said she was not a confident saxophone player at first because she was around students who had practiced since sixth grade.

“I felt under them a lot because I wasn’t as good as them,” Jones said. “My band director pushed me. I was in the jazz band sophomore year and he gave me a big solo. That’s what motivated me and got me out of my shell. The solo went really well so kudos to him.”

After high school, Jones plans to major in music education with a goal of teaching at the high school level before moving up to the college level. She is already thinking of the next instrument to add to her repertoire.

“I want to learn bassoon,” Jones said. “I think they’re really cool.”

Jones has played piano since she was five, guitar since she was ten, bass guitar for two years and mandolin for five years. She said music is a universal language.

“Music speaks to everybody,” Jones said. “Everyone understands music. It’s a universal language and it brings people together.”
