New soccer coach leads team to play-off opportunity

For varsity boys’ soccer coach Jeremy Chettinger, the road to Kimbrough Memorial Stadium began in Germany.

Chettinger, the former assistant soccer coach at Caprock High School, first became interested in fútbol while stationed in Germany after completing basic training.

“While I was over there, I kind of fell in love with it,” Chettinger said.

Chettinger was then stationed in California, where his friends encouraged his interest in soccer. After serving in the military, Chettinger became a police officer and started coaching children’s soccer for kids ages 5 to 15. He then moved back to the panhandle to finish his teaching degree.

“I’ve always been interested in sports,” Chettinger said. “In high school, I made the decision I wanted to be involved in sports. My favorite part about soccer is probably that it’s the ultimate team sport where it doesn’t matter how good the other team is. You always have a chance.”

Senior varsity player Chase Browne said the team is doing well after adjusting to the new coach.

“At first, I was a little bit worried, but it wasn’t bad because he’s a good coach,” Browne said. “He’s easy to follow.”

Browne has been on varsity for two years and said the team now does more intricate drills.

“The hardest part of adjusting is the fact that you’re used to someone else for the past three years, and you have to listen to someone you don’t really know,” Browne said.

Chettinger said the most challenging part of coaching is keeping the team focused and motivated.

“They’re confident but yet they know there’s room to get better,” Chettinger said. “They’re progressing and getting better as the season goes on because of that.”
