The Amarillo health department will be at Canyon High School in the conference room behind the front office Thursday, Feb. 8 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. to administer the meningitis shot.
School nurse Brooke Hancock said any student enrolling in college in the state of Texas must have proof of a meningitis shot within the last five years prior to enrolling to college.

“They must have the shot at least 10 days before the first day of school (college),” Hancock said. “Every senior was given paperwork and must bring that with them when they come. If they have Medicaid, they must write their number down and the shot is free.”
Hancock also said if students have insurance and it doesn’t cover the shot, they need to bring $10.00 and their paperwork.
“It’s a great opportunity to get their shots early and be ready to enroll for college and not wait till this summer when pharmacies start running out,” Hancock said.
