Do’s and Don’ts of a Single Valentine’s Day

It’s Valentine’s Day, and if you don’t have someone to celebrate it with, like me, don’t fear!

  1. Do go to dinner with your friends and/or family. They have loved you for your entire life and will continue to do so. Presumably. Maybe there is a reason you are single.
  2. Don’t call it Single Awareness Day (S.A.D). You should be happy instead, because cultural norms aren’t forcing you to buy someone else a teddy bear, roses, and/or expensive chocolates that can’t decide what flavor they want to be.
  3. Do go to see a movie with your other single friends. Together, you can throw popcorn at the people living in couplehood.
  4. Do. Not. Get. On. Social. Media. You will see so many pictures of girls, their Valentines and their icky lovey-dovey hashtags that you will want to throw your phone across the room and join a convent.
  5. Read a book. Particularly The Fault in our Stars. It’s an adorable love story, and you will weep.
  6. Do eat chocolate. In your loneliness, you won’t have to share it with anyone.
  7. But don’t eat your fictional boyfriend’s weight in chocolate. He won’t appreciate it.
  8. Bring Valentine’s cards, like the ones you used in elementary school, to your friends. Challenge yourself to use the whole box.
  9. Don’t buy a boyfriend pillow. You won’t have fun when your parents walk into your room and you have to explain why there’s an arm wrapped around you that’s not yours.
  10. Do be your own Valentine. Ain’t nobody said that you can’t love yourself.
