Lady Eagles basketball team starts district play
The varsity girls basketball team will take on Hereford Dec. 13 after a win against Stratford Dec. 6.
The score remained close throughout the Stratford game, but Eagles pulled ahead in the fourth quarter with a final score of 46-32. The game against Hereford will begin the district season. Head coach Joe Lombard said the team goals include winning district as well as region and state
“We have some new faces and also changing roles of some experienced players,” Lombard said. “We start play in the toughest 5A district in the state of Texas. From top to bottom, our district has many great teams, so night in and night out we will be in a dog fight.”
In previous years, Hereford has played strongly against Canyon, but junior Blaire Winings said this year’s team may be better prepared.
“It’s always different every year, so it will be a good game,” Winings said. “We have a good team with a lot of depth and a lot of us have experience. We take each game one by one, we prepare, and we treat everyone the same and focus on that one game.”
The Eagles are undefeated in their season with an overall win-loss record of 8-0.
“The team has improved steadily throughout the fall,” Lombard said. “Our last few games have been our best as we won the Kids Inc. tourney in Canyon this past weekend. We are very excited about this season and the opportunities we can achieve for the school.”
