Senior Isaac Garland prepares to hit the ball at a scrimmage, February 16.

The varsity baseball team will play Plainview at Artesia, New Mexico 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 22, and 12 p.m. Saturday, May 23.

Last Saturday, the team played El Paso Eastlake at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, New Mexico. By winning the game, the team advanced from area to regional quarterfinals. Senior Isaac Garland hit the winning ball in the eighth inning, pulling ahead 4 to 3.

“Austin was on first and Owen was on second,” Garland said. “It was our last chance to score. It we don’t score, we go to another inning. I was next up to bat and I hit it and Owen scored. It was pretty awesome.”

After Garland hit the ball, junior Owen Carver ran to home base, scoring the point needed to win the game. Garland said it’s going to be hard to leave the team this year.

“We hang out together a lot,” Garland said. “We play Killer after team meal. We play video games at each other’s houses. We’re pretty close this year.”

Senior Austin Baker plays shortstop and said the game may be hard.

“On to the next one, I guess,” Baker said. “The game will be pretty tough for sure. It’ll be a challenge but we should be able to get it done.”
