Canyon claims bi-district title, to face El Paso Bowie

The Canyon Eagles won the bi-district championship last Friday night with a crushing defeat over the Hereford Whitefaces 71-21. Canyon will face El Paso Bowie Saturday at 4 p.m. in Midland at Grande Communications Stadium.

Senior quarterback Blake Weaver put the first points on the board for the Eagles with a29-yard keeper. Senior Chris Spencer completed a one-yard run for the two-point conversion. Senior Tanner Nease returned a 51-yard punt return to put Canyon up 14-0. Senior Drew Mannon intercepted a Hereford pass for 30-yard touchdown, and Spencer had a 76-yard touchdown to put Canyon ahead 28-0. Hereford scored their first points of the game at the end first quarter, and it was Canyon’s ball again an unsuccessful on-side kick attempt recovered by junior Lance Burnam.

Weaver moved the Eagles to Hereford’s one-yard line with a 61-yard keeper. Spencer scored the one-yard touchdown to put canyon up 35-7. Senior Gunner Johnson recovered a fumble on Hereford’s 26-yard line, leading to a four-yard touchdown by Weaver. A 70-yard run by Weaver set up a touchdown by junior Derrick Spencer. A PA hold fumble forced Weaver to scramble before finding senior Cal Cunyus in the end zone for two points. Canyon led Hereford 57-14 at halftime.

Canyon began the second half quickly with a 65-yard touchdown by junior Isaac Garland. Junior Cade McCallie intercepted a Hereford pass in the end zone for an Eagle touchback. Junior Ty Blevins returned an interception for a60-yard touchdown, 71-14 Canyon. Hereford scored a final time to end the game at 71-21.

“Most people thought we were going to overlook Hereford, but we came out stronger than we did in any game, especially the defense,” junior Ty Crenshaw said. “It was a fun game to be a part of.”
