The varsity tennis team clinched the district championship last Saturday with a 16-3 win Amarillo High. The Eagles are undefeated in district play after defeating the Randall Raiders in their last district match Tuesday.

“This is the first year we’ve beat Amarillo High in district, which is a great accomplishment knowing they were the district champions last year,” senior Sammy Hogan said.

Freshman Brailey McMinn said that she felt relieved when they won district because it proved that they could accomplish their goals.

“I think most of our success comes from Coach Gonzales,” Hogan said. “He’s done an outstanding job this year and is giving us the opportunity to go to state.”

This is Gonzales’ first season as the varsity tennis coach at Canyon High.

“Coach Gonzales really helped us through our matches, and I think he’s a really good coach,” McMinn said. “I’m glad he’s our coach now.”

Canyon will head to the newly-added Area Tournament next Friday and Saturday.

“It will be a team tournament and the top two teams will move on to regionals,” Hogan said. “I think we should do pretty well.”

Senior Austin Wheeler said he believes that state is a very realistic goal for their team.

“We expect to win not only district, but the area tournament as well,” Wheeler said. “This should be the best season we’ve had since I’ve played for our high school.”
