Canyon sends Plainview Bulldogs to the pound

Senior quarterback Blake Weaver breaks a Bulldog tackle to score for Canyon.

The Eagles defeated the Plainview Bulldogs last night 42-3. With a record of 3-0, Canyon will face Hereford next Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Hereford.

Canyon put their first points on the board with five minutes left in the first quarter with a six-yard scoring run by senior quarterback Blake Weaver. The Eagles led Plainview 6-0.

At the start of the second quarter a fumble recovery by Plainview led to a field goal to make the score 6-3. A 41-yard run by senior Chris Spencer set up a touchdown pass to senior Autry Dowd. After two scoring runs by Weaver, Canyon led 28-3 at halftime.

Plainview started the second half with a drive to the Canyon four-yard line, however, they were held scoreless by the Eagle defense. A six-yard touchdown pass to senior Tanner Nease put Canyon ahead 35-3 with 11:55 left in the game. Following a Plainview pass picked off by senior Abrham Posadas, junior Cade McCallie entered the game as quarterback. A four-yard touchdown by senior Logan Leazenby would make the final score 42-3.

“I thought we played well,” Weaver said. “Our defense really stepped up and made a statement against them. We knew they were going to run it right down the middle, so we were ready for that. On offense they didn’t do what we were expecting from watching film, so we had re-strategize on the sideline.”

Weaver said the team expects a good game against Hereford next Friday.

“We do expect to come out on top again,” Weaver said. “We’ve got to go into next week and practice hard. We can’t under-estimate them.”
