Sophomore Aaron Hughes and junior Jake Relyea go up for the rebound against Amarillo High in Jan. 15 win.

The Canyon Eagle varsity basketball teams faced off last night against the Amarillo High Sandies in one of the must-see district matchups of the season. The girls’ basketball team fought hard throughout the entire game and were tied 17-17 at halftime. Canyon could not pull ahead in the second half and lost to the Lady Sandies by only two points, 35-37.

The boys’ team had no smaller feat against Amarillo High than the Lady Eagles. Canyon had the lead at halftime, 21-20, but had to fight from behind in the second half. The Eagles fought until the very end to defeat the Sandies 58-54.

“The key to the second half was shutting down their offense, especially John Hood,” junior Dylan Douglass said. “Also, since we started out kind of slow, we really needed to start working as a team and creating offensive opportunities.”

Canyon’s basketball teams will play Palo Duro this Friday at the Dons gym. The girls begin at 6 p.m. and the boys begin at 7:30 p.m.

“I think PD is going to be a tougher game than Amarillo High, mostly because of the rivalry and because both of us know how good the other team is,” Douglass said. “Therefore, we’re going to have to step it up if we plan to win.”
