Sophomore Aaron Hughes gets air in Tuesday night’s game against the Randall Raiders. Canyon defeated Randall 53-51.

The varsity boys’ basketball team defeated the Randall Raiders last night in a heated district rivalry by a final score of 53-51.

Within the final minutes of the game, Randall made a strong attempt to diminish Canyon’s lead by scoring 14 points. In a nerve racking final minute, two free throws by junior Jacob Relyea secured Canyon the win.

“I just knew I had to make them because I let my man hit the game tying shot so I would have felt real bad if we had lost,” Relyea said. “Coach Crenshaw told us to quit turning over, stay calm and make strong passes because we had the game in our hands.”

Canyon’s team has four people sick as of now so they have altered their game plan for this Friday’s matchup against Dumas at 7:30 in Canyon.

“The starting lineup and rotations have changed, and Dumas has their best player back for the first time, but we should still be okay,” Relyea said.
