Tennis team finishes second in district, competes at regional tourney today

The varsity tennis team finished second place in district this year, behind the undefeated Amarillo High Sandies. Canyon traveled to Wichita Falls yesterday to compete in the annual regional tournament today and tomorrow.

The Eagles finished with a 7-3 district record, losing only to Dumas and Amarillo High.

“We did as well as I thought we would in district, aside from losing to Dumas once,” junior Austin Wheeler said. “Unfortunately, no one on our team had the confidence to beat Amarillo High.”

This year was Canyon’s first year to face Amarillo High in district play, after the Sandies moved down to 4A. The Sandie tennis team was ranked within the top 25 teams before moving down from 5A.

“Our main goal this season was to make it out of district.” Wheeler said.

In the week prior to the regional tournament, Wheeler said that he was confident that the team could make it through to the second day of competition in Wichita Falls.

“If we have a good draw, I think we could make it through to the finals to face Amarillo High again,” Wheeler said.

The 2012 varsity team consists of three freshmen, seven sophomores, seven juniors and three seniors.

“Overall it was a pretty positive year,” Wheeler said. “I’m just happy we made it out of our district and I’m glad we stayed together as a team throughout all of the ups and downs.”
