Football faces first loss in district opener against rival Raiders

The Canyon Eagle football team fell to the Randall Raiders Friday night in the district rivalry by a final score of 13-23.

Canyon was first on the scoreboard after a field goal by sophomore Ryan Guevara. The first quarter would end with a 3-7, Randall lead.

Randall scored another touchdown, before senior Hunter Burrell scored an Eagle touchdown. The Raiders scored a field goal in the final seconds of the first half. Canyon trailed 10-17 by half time.

Guevara scored another field goal for Canyon in the third quarter, closing the gap 13-17.

The Randall Raiders scored the final points of the night, and after a two-point conversion attempt stopped by the Eagle defense, the game ended at 13-23.

“Our defense played great, possibly the greatest game we’ve played our whole high school career,” senior leading receiver Clay Erwin said. “Our offense played good, we just made mistakes at the wrong times.”

Canyon will travel to Dumas this Friday to play the Demons, kick off at 7:30 p.m.

“We should handle Dumas very well, they seem to have a decent offense but our defense will shut them down,” Erwin said. “Unlike Randall, they pass half of the time, so our secondary is going to have to step it up.”
