Players’ words, actions have hard-hitting impact
“I’m not a racist.”
Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Richie Incognito has stated in multiple public comments that he didn’t know he was hurting his former teammate Jonathan Martin with his words and actions, saying that’s just how they communicated with each other. Incognito was suspended for leaving Martin vulgar texts and a voicemail. Martin’s attorney considers Incognito’s actions bullying, but he claims it “came from a place of love.”
In published accounts, Martin says he was trying to become friends again with his teammates who harassed him. His attorney David Cornwell says Martin’s is a reaction of people who get bullied. Martin says he left his team because the “culture” got to him. Incognito says he wants to clear his name and that he’s a good person.
I say a player’s actions and words can represent not only themselves but their organization.
When you say things on the field, people don’t know who you are; they see the school name across your chest. It’s important to be a good sport. Problems occur when there are negative words exchanged towards the other team. Do the right thing and walk away.
This story isn’t the only one out there; there are hundreds of similar stories from high schools to middle schools. Athletes might never know what an opponent or teammate has been through. He or she could have a tough time at home, and the only moment that athlete felt free from those circumstances was robbed by someone calling them a name.
Don’t say things you’ll regret, but say things that inspire. Your words can have a huge impact not only on the field but in life. It could turn out positive or it could turn out sour. You decide.
