Journalism students win 14 state individual achievement awards

Canyon High journalism students brought home 14 individual achievement awards from the state convention of the UIL Interscholastic Press Conference for stories and photos published in the print and online versions of The Eagle’s Tale. The IAA awards are presented by conference size, and Canyon’s awards are for 4A-1 schools.

The 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 yearbook and newspaper editors-in-chief  represented the school at the convention where they attended workshops and viewed publications from across the state.

Senior Kate Shepherd was recognized as a Commended National Merit Scholar by Principal Jennifer Boren on October 9. “It's an honor, and it's kind of exciting because it'll help a lot with college scholarships, and it's just a good thing to have on your application,” Shepherd said.

Junior, Deegan Scarborough, marches with the band at the homecoming parade. “It was a really long parade, it was really hot, but I had a lot of fun playing with the band and marching and supporting the school,” Scarborough said. “My homecoming was pretty fun. I brought my first date to the homecoming game and it was really fun.”

I am co-president of choir, secretary of National Honor Society, president of Palo Duro 4-H Club and am involved in Key Club, musical, Drama Club, the all-state choir process and UIL academics.
