Marching band places second in festival, to compete in UIL Saturday

Marching band places second in festival, to compete in UIL Saturday

The marching band will compete Saturday, Oct. 13 at Dick Bivins stadium at 7:45 for the UIL Regional contest. Because this is not a state year for 4A schools, the regional contest will be their final UIL competition of the marching season. However, the band will compete at the ZIA marching festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Oct. 20.

The band also competed in a contest last Saturday and after performing at finals, placed second. A larger band from Clovis, New Mexico placed first.

In September, the band was named a commended winner in the Mark of Excellence/National Wind Band Honors project from the Foundation for Music Education. The Mark of excellence is a competition, entered by recordings, in which the top quarter is selected as National Winners and the second quarter receive Commended Honors. This year, 184 of the finest musical ensembles in the nation from 35 different states entered the competition.

Hellllloooo! My name is Abby Caviness, and this is my third year on staff. Though my height suggests otherwise, I am a senior and will turn 18 on 11/11. I am a member of the Soaring Pride Band as a marimba player and an oboe player during concert season. In my free time, I like to drink coffee, listen to music and watch an entire television series in a day. I am a part of countless fandoms, including Harry Potter, The Hunger Games and Divergent. If you also share these interests, I’ll easily be your friend. I am very excited to be writing for the newspaper this year, and I’ll do my best to help make it amazing.
