Norman Grimes named to ALL-USA Preseason Boys Track Team
USA Today has named senior Norman Grimes to the ALL-USA Preseason Boys Track and Field Team.
Grimes was one of four boys honored as a hurdler. According to USA Today, his times include 110 meters, 13.71; 300 meters, 36.10; and 400 hurdles, 50.10. Most recently, Grimes won the 110 meter hurdles in 14.0 and the 300 meter hurdles in 36.33 at the Texas Relays April 1 and 2.
“I’m honored to be named to the All-USA Preseason Boys Track and Field Team and look forward to a successful season,” Grimes said.
When USA Today contacted the Grimes family for a photo, Norman’s mother contacted The Eagle’s Tale newspaper adviser, Laura Smith.
“We were excited to help honor Norman and always enjoy working with him,” Smith said. “I appreciate the opportunity for one of our student photographers to have work published in a national publication.”
Smith asked The Eagle’s Tale co-editor-in-chief Avery Cummings to assist with the project, and her photo was published on the USA Today website.
“The opportunity to take a picture for USA Today was amazing,” Cummings said. “I was excited to take the photo, and more excited that it was for Norman.”
During the summer of 2015, Grimes represented the USA in several international races. In addition, Grimes was named the 2014-2015 Gatorade State Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Criteria for the Gatorade award included athletic production and impact in the 2014-15 season. Each winner also demonstrated academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.
