Cross country season ends with personal mile records
Both boys’ and girls’ varsity cross country teams completed their season Nov. 8 at the state meet in Round Rock, Texas. The girls finished in seventh place with 209 points while the boys finished in 10th place with 232 points.
Sophomore Angel Hayden placed fifth at the meet along with freshman Ayse Allison who placed 18th. Junior Treet Allison finished in 37th place and junior Joseph Trevino placed 42nd. Boys’ cross country coach Wes Kirton said that the team had expectations that they would do well at state.
“They raced very well through region and most of our times really increased,” Kirton said. “The team had some great personal records at region so we carried that into state. State went out a lot quicker, and it cooked their engines.”
Kirton said some of the runners hit their personal records for the first mile of the three-mile race because the races started fast.
“They had a tough go of it,” Kirton said. “This is the second year since they have changed the course so that played into our approach. We are definitely wiser now.”
Kirton said that despite the outcome at state, it was still a great season.
“The teams have really worked their tails off,” Kirton said. “There were a lot of things that went right. Our top three runners are coming back. Our next four and five could be just as strong as this year’s. I do think we could be stronger. I’m ready to go down there and win.”
