Mini-cheer camp set for Sept. 1
The Canyon High School cheerleaders will host a mini-cheer camp for all kindergartners through fourth graders Thursday, Sept. 1 from 4:30 to 6:00.
Parents who pre-register their students can expect to pay $25, while parents will pay $30 if they register when they drop their student off the day of the mini camp in the high school commons. Students who participate in the camp will also cheer with the varsity cheerleaders on the field before the varsity football game Friday, Sept. 2. Any questions should be directed to varsity cheer sponsor Anne Skalsky.
“All of our squads break them apart and teach them the different skills,” Skalsky said. “They will be learning a cheer, a chant and a dance, and that’s what they will perform Friday night at the game.”
The groups will go from station to station throughout the high school downstairs commons.
“I remember when I was a little girl and went to mini cheer camps and how much I looked up to the girls,” sophomore cheerleader Emily Thurman said. “That’s how I knew cheering is what I wanted to do in high school.”
Junior Chloe Kemp said she feels proud and honored to be able to display character and leadership to these little girls.
“I love cheering with the little girls on the field,” Kemp said. “I enjoy being a role model and positive influence for them.”
All participants will get into the game for free and should arrive to the field at 6:15. Parents who want to watch their students preform will need to pay the full admission fee. The students will be released shortly after the performance.
“It’s pretty cool to see them work hard and get to show off what they learned,” Thurman said. “They look up to us, and their smiles are so big when they get to perform at the games.”
