The boys’ varsity basketball team promotes Kyle Lovorn as its head coach for the 2025-2026 school year. The position was offered to him on March 18.
“As soon as I was offered the position, I accepted it,” Kyle said. “I was able to talk to our players about it and let them know as well.”
Kyle has been coaching basketball for 16 years. He started immediately after graduating from Texas Tech in 2009, beginning his coaching career at Panhandle High School as an assistant girls’ coach.
“I really fell in love with basketball while growing up,” Kyle said. “Growing up and graduating from Canyon, I enjoyed my experience here.”
The impact Kyle brings to the student body will be more than just the basketball team. Matt Lovorn, his twin brother and football offensive coordinator, said he is one of the best coaches in the state.
“He continues to build relationships over the years with his players, coaches, parents and community,” Matt said. “As you can imagine, this carries so much further than just basketball.”
Students will try new drills and plays under a new coaching style brought by Kyle.
“It’s going to be good, trying new things,” junior Callahan Munsell said. “It’s going to be weird not having the same head coach you’ve had for years.”
Bringing change to the team will take time to adjust, but will bring his success to the court.
“My brother has a gift for bringing out the best in young athletes, no matter what sport he’s coaching,” Matt said. “He’s been extremely successful in his career coaching basketball, and I know he will continue to do the same here as the head boys basketball coach for CHS. His teams will lean on having an aggressive defense, being great decision makers and always having a high level of composure.”
