For the first time since 2021 the Lady Eagles basketball team is headed back to the Alamodome for the State Tournament.
In the Regional Quarterfinal the Lady Eagles defeated the Seminole Indians 56-47 to advance to the Regional Tournament at Lubbock Christian University. When the Lady Eagles faced Seminole earlier in the season, they fell short by 20 points.
“Throughout the whole tournament we all connected well and played good defense as a team,” Sophomore Kambrie Graser said. “We had to limit our turnovers and we communicated well on the court while on defense to get another chance to be on offense.”
When the Lady Eagles met up with Decatur in the preseason they lost by one point in overtime, but the Lady Eagles came back to defeat Decatur in the Regional Semifinal 48-26.
“We scouted their back screens and handoffs really well and did not let them get easy baskets,” Junior Jaylee Moss said. “It was a really good game for us and it truly showed how much we have grown as a team.”
The Canyon Lady Eagles moved on to play the no.1 ranked Glen Rose Tigers in the Regional final on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Eagles led the score at half 22-10 and did not let up as they took home the Regional Championship title with a 47-37 victory.
“Several different players stepped up and made big plays each game that led us to win,” Head coach Tate Lombard said. “Our defense and offense execution was key to the victory.”
After gaining the Regional Title, junior Sydnee Winfrey and sophomore Kambrie Graser were recognized for all-tournament awards. Winfrey, who led the team in points throughout the tournament with 29 points received the Tournament MVP. Graser followed closely with 11 points and was selected for the All-tournament team.
“During the Regional Tournament our team played together, we had a positive mindset and we were confident going into each game,” Winfrey said. “We played like how we always play and hit big shots at the right time.”
The Eagles will begin their run at the State tournament Friday, March 1, against the 34-4 Boerne Greyhounds at 3 p.m. in the Alamodome.
