Junior Chance Neese won first place in computer generated graphic art.

Eleven students competed in the Top of Texas Career and Technology Education (CTE) Competition April 27-28 at Tulia High School.

Students competed for cash prizes and scholarships, with seven Canyon students winning first place in their event. Steven Thrasher teaches Digital Media and is one of the sponsors of the Canyon CTE organization.

“It brings the kids together to compete,” Thrasher said. “You see where you stand against other schools in the area.”

Senior Chance Neese placed first in Computer Generated Art in his first time competing in the CTE competition.

“I thought it was insanely cool to see what other students had built,” Neese said. “It was cool to see all these things that were built that looked like they were built by master builders.”

Senior Isaac Ortiz said he gained a better understanding of hardships of stop motion animation during his project.

“I got to experience this for the first time, and I could see all the frustrations that all the stop motion creators went through in order to make a good video,” Ortiz said. “I could see how they felt afterwards. As for an end result, I felt pretty good about it, and I don’t know how most stop motion animators feel after a big project, but for me I felt like ‘holy smokes, this was amazing.’”
