CISD to run safety drills Friday
The district-wide “Safety Day” will be Friday, Aug. 29. Canyon High School will be on regular bell schedule.
Students will run several drills throughout the school day: a fire drill during first period, a lockdown drill third period, a tight bell schedule between third and fourth period, a severe weather drill sixth period and an obstructed fire drill during seventh period.
“Each year we bring in a new freshmen class and about 60 new students, so we want to make sure that everyone is up to date on all of the drills,” assistant principal Steven Singleton said. “We want them to know how to react in any kind of situation, whether it is severe weather, or a fire, or a lockdown.”
Singleton said he wants the students to learn and be active because campus safety cannot depend entirely upon teachers.
“Our students need to be the ones engaged in the drills and taking care of their campus,” Singleton said. “They represent their school and community every day in everything they do so we expect them to be learners and to get out there and participate.”
