Students place in woodworking contest

The Region 16 Service Center in Amarillo hosted the Top of Texas Career and Technical Education contest in early May.

Canyon entered 67 projects, earning 21 first places, 14 second places and 11 third place projects. In addition, students won prizes including tools and money. The students from a variety of Career and Technical Education, or CTE, classes compete in woodworking, metalworking, audio video, graphic design and business competitions.

CTE teacher Bill Troyer said judges look for quality work.

“Honestly, they go through it and judge everything on the finish as far as projects like woodworking and metal working go,” Troyer said. “It comes down to the appearance of it and how well the finish is. The nice thing is the kids enjoy it because they get to go show their projects off that they’ve completed.”

Senior Chance Turner won a $1000 scholarship in the wood/metal category. Senior Thayne Slater won first place with his cedar chest and received a $100 Visa gift card, an Acacia Hardwoods $250 scholarship and a 3/8 Dewalt drill from Hereford Hardware. Sophomore Liam Marshall won a $75 gift card for second place overall CNC/CAM project for his handmade table.
