For the safety of students and staff, Canyon schools experienced a two-hour delay Tuesday, Oct. 27 and a snow day Wednesday, Oct. 28. A total of 4.5 inches fell across the Amarillo area on Wednesday setting a new Oct. 28 record for snowfall.

Junior, Deegan Scarborough, marches with the band at the homecoming parade. “It was a really long parade, it was really hot, but I had a lot of fun playing with the band and marching and supporting the school,” Scarborough said. “My homecoming was pretty fun. I brought my first date to the homecoming game and it was really fun.”

Senior Caroline Ragland and freshman Maleena Barrientos compete in their third round of the West Texas National Qualifier Tournament. This is the pair's first year debating together, and the two have spent the majority of the year attending online tournaments because of COVID-19 restrictions. Barrientos said the partners debate in suit jackets and sweat pants because they only speak sitting down at computers. “Debating on computers is different in terms of giving information,” Barrientos said. “You communicate in a whole new way. Debating is still fun though. We argue about legislation and how things get done in government. The topic this year is about federal reform on the criminal justice system and how we can solve problems when it comes to policing, sentencing or forensics. I can uphold my opinions in a manner where it’s fun, but we’re talking about things we can change.”

Senior Elizebeth Daeley works on her project for Wayland Baptist University’s Language and Culture Festival in AP Spanish IV. Students have the option to perform skits, poetry reading, extemporaneous speaking, dance, music, art and songs. Daeley created an alebrije, a mythical spirit guide in Hispanic cultures. "I didn't want to make a traditional project," Daeley said. "I wanted to be more fun and creative. I decided to create a dinosaur parrot bunny. I enjoy this class; it's fun learning about my own culture."

Before traveling to San Angelo to compete in their State Championship Semi-Final game, the Lady Eagles basketball team were part of a send off during first period Friday, March 5. The team will play against Pinkston on Saturday, March 6 at 2:30 p.m. The Pinkston Vikings were ranked second in their district and have a season record of 25-7; The Lady Eagles were ranked first in their district, with a season record of 28-1. If Canyon wins the game, the team will move on to the State Championships.

Sitting atop a shelf of library books in the nonfiction section of the learning commons, a statue head is adorned with a paper face mask. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, those over the age of two should wear a face mask while in a public setting or around people who do not live with the person. However, masks are not a substitution for social distancing. Staying six feet apart from others while indoors is advised. The CDC actively studies face masks and the effectiveness of mask variants and continually updates the public on their website, cdc.gov/coronavirus.

As a part of a lab in anatomy and physiology in sixth period, teacher Cortney Shaller demonstrates making the initial incision of a cow's eye to junior Diego Sanchez Thursday, Jan. 21. "Dissection allows the student to have a hands-on experience and allows them to physically touch and observe the different organs," Shaller said. "This experience allows students to observe how form and function work hand in hand. This gives them a better understanding of their own bodies."
