HOSA students advance to state competition
Students from the Canyon Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) chapter hosted and competed in the Area 4 HOSA Conference at Canyon High School Jan. 20 and 21.
HOSA chapters from across the panhandle traveled to Canyon for the HOSA Area 4 conference. Chapters competed in various medical competitions and listened to a keynote speech given by Amarillo Oro-maxillo Surgery.
“HOSA provides a sense of community,” said HOSA chapter president Tucker Fischbacher. “We get to meet all different people from different schools. A lot of leadership goes into it. You have to focus on your own event, and you also help others with their competitions, so you have to take the initiative to make your project something worth doing.”
HOSA is often tied into the health science curriculum of schools.
“The purpose of the HOSA organization is to develop leadership and technical HOSA skill competencies through a program of motivation, awareness and recognition, which is an integral part of the Health Science Education instructional program,” said HOSA adviser and health sciences teacher Paige Tucker.
Eight Canyon students will advance to the state conference after competing at area.
“We are very optimistic about the performance we did at area and very excited to see the performance we do at state,” Fischbacher said. “We are very proud of the competitors and all the work they put into their competition.”
