17 students named to all-region choir
The 17 Canyon students named to the TMEA all-region choir will sing in concert 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at WTAMU and advance to pre-area auditions Dec. 3.
Canyon brought 22 students to the region audition Oct. 31. Students from two district choirs arrived at Caprock High School in the morning and auditioned with parts from three different songs as well as sightreading, where students have 30 seconds to learn and sing a line of music they have not seen before. Students are then placed in the choir in positions called chairs with first chair being the best audition. Senior Blakelee Brownd received first chair in the Alto 2 section.
“I honestly have never been more prepared for a contest than this one,” Brownd said. “I figured since it was my senior year it was time to get down and do it.”
Brownd has competed in the process all four years of high school and said competing has benefited her both as a musician and as a person.
“I can learn music crazy fast and know different styles and origins of music from around the world,” Brownd said. “I also enjoy all the people I get to work with. Mr. Farren, Mrs. Harter and our choir are such blessings, and I thank them for helping me become who I am today.”
Students who advanced now have a month to learn two new pieces of music and prepare for more sightreading at the next audition, in which the top few voices will advance to a final audition for the all-state choir.
“The thing about this process is that it can only help you to grow,” sophomore Mitchell Hernandez said. “You have to stay competitive, and that is what the next audition is for.”
