Drama club to offer children’s class
The Canyon High School Drama club will offer a children’s theater class every Thursday from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. for students in the first through eighth grade.
Theater teacher Dave Yirak and members of the drama club will teach the class on Thursdays when school is in session for $100 a semester. All proceeds will go to the Canyon High School Drama Club. The children will learn different acting skills including pantomime, memorization and vocal skills.
“I would like the kids to learn how to express themselves and to prepare them to go on stage,” Yirak said. “We are going to make it as fun as possible. I have some great students helping me.”
Although Yirak said the class has not been offered for approximately seven years, he is excited to see the outcome of this year.
“We had done it for 10 to 15 years earlier, and I got some incredible talent from some of the young kids,” Yirak said. “It was a great way for my kids to grow at the high school and have a good time doing it. It’s just a win-win situation for the younger kids and my kids.”
The children will be invited to see the all-school musical, tour backstage and meet the cast Nov. 13. They will perform a showcase for family and friends Dec. 18.
“I’m really excited about getting to interact with the kids and sparking their enthusiasm for theater,” senior and drama club member Keegan Fenton said. “I think they will be very excited for the performance and hope they will do wonderfully.”
Parents who wish to enroll their children or have any questions can contact Yirak at (806)220-6579 or (806)677-2740.
