Speech and debate hosts tournament to raise funds

Papers began to fly as students from all around the Panhandle rushed to find any information about their topic. Canyon High watched the students work to catch up but couldn’t help them. After all, Canyon was running this tournament.

Canyon High and Randall High teamed up this weekend for the first annual swing Can-dall speech and debate tournament. Randall hosted the tournament on Friday, while Canyon hosted on Saturday. This was the Speech and Debate club’s main fundraiser for travel expenses to tournaments all around the state. The team raised around 3,500 dollars for travel.

“We represented Canyon High very well for the first time appearing at a Randall tournament,” Jayden Beatty, president of the Speech and Debate club, said. “We made a lot of money in our tournament which is going to help us a lot.”

Canyon also competed in a few of the competitions at the tournament. Seven students total from Canyon placed in competitions. Jayden Beatty received the highest placing from Canyon which was second in Congressional debate.

“I had some really good competition,” Beatty said. “I am really proud of myself for doing as well as I did. I think everyone did pretty well.”

Josh Collins, Associate Editor
This one time, in Australia… Hello everyone! My name is Josh Collins, and I am an associate editor. I am a senior at Canyon High and am involved with several clubs and organizations. I am the president of Key Club, the president of National Honors Society, and am involved heavily with the American Sign Language Honor Society. I am also in the PRO program as well as the CHS End It movement. This summer I took a trip to Australia to attend a week long program at the University of Melbourne for the Young Leaders Winter Program. It was the best trip of my life, it opened my eyes to many cultural differences, and I loved every second. I also worked this summer at Ceta Canyon Methodist Church and Retreat Center. It was my second year working there and was an amazing experience. If I’m not at home napping, I am probably at Sonic or the movies. I love sushi, music, the ocean and writing! I especially love writing entertainment review and features. For college, my dream is to return to the University of Melbourne.
