‘American Sniper’ hits its mark with patriotic message
The movie theater falls silent as scenes from the former US Navy Seal’s funeral procession play across the screen. The movie ends and there is a sudden, unanimous applause. This isn’t a fictional story, though. This is the real story of America’s deadliest sniper, Chris Kyle.
“American Sniper” is directed by actor Clint Eastwood with Bradley Cooper in the lead role as Chris Kyle. Cooper and Eastwood spent many months with Kyle’s wife, Taya Kyle, trying to capture the character of Chris Kyle. Taya is played by British actress Sienna Miller, who spent time talking and listening to Taya’s story in order to accurately portray her in the film. Cooper, in order to pull off the physical characteristics of the buff SEAL, went through a strict diet and training regimen to pack on 40 pounds. Their efforts to accurately portray Chris’ story comes out on the screen and is evident to those who watch the film. The movie describes Kyle’s battles not only overseas, but at home as well.
The movie was filmed mostly on sets in California, but parts were also filmed in Morocco. Although the film only contains three songs, the music goes unnoticed because the audience is so engaged in the intense action and well-developed plot. The 132 minute movie kept the audience riveted and constantly surprised without being too long.
Throughout the film, the audience sees Chris Kyle’s struggle to make difficult decisions in battle while his wife faces the challenge of parenting alone and dealing with limited and sometimes confusing information about her husband’s safety. In an interview with MilitaryTimes.com, Taya Kyle said Cooper portrayed Chris so well she felt her husband was actually on screen.
“American Sniper” has grossed more than $200 million since its release. The movie is rated R for its bloodshed, violence and intense language, but the message behind the film shows the reality of war and brings a sense of patriotism. Parents should be wary of bringing their children. Parental guidance is necessary for children under 14 years old.
While most civilians will never know what the life of someone in the military is like, “American Sniper” offers a small glimpse. The gritty, realistic movie is similar to films like “Saving Private Ryan” and “Black Hawk Down.” This movie is truly an all-American film that everyone should see at least once.
