Death of counselor shocks family, students

Counselor Ramona Hawkins died Saturday, Feb. 6 after suffering a brain aneurysm in her home Friday morning. Services were held Tuesday afternoon at First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo.

Hawkins grew up in Electra, Texas and attended West Texas State University. She graduated in 1973 with a degree in English education and received her Master’s degree from WT in 1980.

Hawkins worked in education for 36 years, 20 of those years as a counselor for Canyon ISD.

In addition to serving as a counselor, Hawkins was involved in other school activities such as sponsoring a student trip to Italy in the summer of 2008 and co-sponsoring student council for two years with Michaeleen Bainum.

“My favorite times were traveling with Ramona,” Bainum said. “She was always up for anything. We rode all the roller coasters at Six Flags, and we went white water rafting. Of course when we went rafting, the girls had to do all the work because we were laughing so hard.”

Hawkins enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren Kage and Sawyer and is survived by her children, Dr. Brent Hawkins and Dr. Jennifer Coffman.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Ramona G. Hawkins Scholarship Fund at Happy State Bank Soncy Branch.
