Former geography and history teacher, Andrew Neighbors was beginning his 27th year teaching when he started his new career as CISD head of transportation on Tuesday, August 31. Former teacher, Wade Williams, came out of retirement to take the position of geography teacher.
“It was tough saying goodbye to my students and also my friends at CHS, but everyone was excited for me about my new job,” Neighbors said.
Neighbors drove a bus for CISD for 14 years. For ten of those years, he drove a morning route, taught all day then drove an afternoon route.
“I always loved teaching,” Neighbors said. “I always believed learning should be fun. Not every day will be super fun because of things like testing, but overall, the classroom should be a fun place to be. I will miss the fun we had learning about geography and history. However, I feel like this job would give me a new challenge in life, and I was ready for an new adventure.”
Williams taught and coached for a total of 27 years, 20 years at CHS. He went into retirement because he thought the program offered really good benefits and a paycheck not to work. However at a football scrimmage at Borger, Principal Jennifer Boren approached him offering Neighbor’s former teaching position.
“It’s really a God-thing,” Williams said. “When they asked me to come back, I couldn’t pick a better place to work and it was a perfect fit. It’s because the people that work here, from top to bottom, we’ve got good custodial staff with Bob Thompson [Maintenance] working on the grounds and keeping this place nice, to great coaching staff and the leadership Mrs. Boren provides is second to none. It’s been fun coming back and seeing the people I hadn’t seen the last three months. I think that made my decision easy. I now work a half day until noon and I can’t go more than that because of Teacher Retirement rules.”
